In the early years after the war, it became customary for a few of the members of the Cannock Ex-Servicemen’s Club to gather round the piano for a sing song. From these humble beginnings 60 years ago, the choir was formed under the guidance of Mr Howard Benton, the first conductor and much revered musician, and was followed by Miss Pauline Gooch, who added her own particular style to the repertoire.
Our much loved accompanist Mrs Dorothy Bates has served the choir loyally under the leadership of Selwyn Whitehouse, Donald Morris, Ron James and recently again under the leadership of Donald Morris, who sadly passed away in May 2007.Dorothy is once again bridging the gap until we find another conductor. Her unfailing good humour, commitment and musical expertise have made her a much admired and respected member of the choir.
The Cannock Ex-Servicemen’s choir practise on Monday evenings at 7.45pm at the Cannock Ex-Servicemen’s club. We sing a wide variety of music and perform at both formal and informal occasions. The choir has had the pleasure of performing with the Walsall Harmonic Male voice Choir, who joined us in 2006 to make a CD which was recorded in St Georges Church at Whittington Barracks.
